People have been using ovens for thousands of years. They are a common sight in households, used by people to heat, roast, and cook various food items.

There are different types of ovens, for example, microwaves, conventional gas and electric, and steam ovens. However, the two most common ones are a toaster and a convection oven, each fulfilling different cooking modes.

But what is the primary difference between a toaster and convection oven? What are some things that you should consider when looking to buy one for your home?

It is essential to do adequate research beforehand because an oven is a significant investment, and making the right choice helps you get the fullest returns.

Convection oven

Convection, also known as fan-assisted ovens, are usually significant, box-shaped electrical devices containing a fan that distributes the heat evenly in its interiors, making them suitable for baking products like bread, broiling meat, and cooking casseroles.

Because of the continuous and even distribution of heated air, the food’s surface is crispier and moist in the center. For one primary reason, many people prefer convection ovens – cleaning is much easier because the continuous flow of air inside the machine prevents food from sticking to the pan.

Toaster

In contrast, a toaster oven is smaller, containing a front door, removable wire rack and baking pan. Since it operates at a low temperature compared to convection, it is suitable for toasting bread, baking small batches of cakes and pizzas, and roasting meat.

The upper and lower parts of the device have heating elements, enabling you to cook food. You will come across several models in the market with convection-like capabilities, for example, timers, built-in fans, and thermostats.

How much do they cost?

You can expect to find a convection oven in the price range of 930 USD to 2,050 USD, depending on the model, features, etc. In contrast, a toaster costs 25 USD to 1,000 USD.

Which device uses less electricity?

An electrically-operated convection model (with a power rating of 2,000 watts) uses about 2 kilowatts of electric energy in an hour when running at maximum power wattage. However, that doesn’t mean convection is not energy-efficient.

You save about 20% of energy every month because the hot air flows steadily inside, drastically reducing the cooking time. Since they don’t require a preheating step, plenty of power is saved in this manner.

A toaster uses between 1,200 to 1,400 watts of power, while the standby power consumption is below 0.2 watts. According to many energy consumption studies, toasters consume one-third to one-half less energy than an electric oven.

How long do they last?

A convection oven should last about 13 years before beginning to cause problems. For instance, in many cases, the electrical cord might require a replacement, or various components such as a heating element, selector switch, timer, fan thermostat, and thermal cutoff could experience a failure.

A toaster lasts about five years before showing signs of wear and tear. Some signs of a replacement are a faulty electrical cord, an improperly closing door, rust, and corrosion on the interiors.

After considering various aspects, including the ones mentioned above, it would be best if you chose between a toaster and convection oven. Both these devices have plenty of advantages, with differences in energy consumption, features, and size. Taking information from websites specializing in kitchen appliances is also an excellent way to decide between the two.
