This tale is really graphic. Even if all murders are horrible, Junko Furuta murder raises the stakes considerably. Junko had endured extremely awful suffering before her life was taken. This type of crime makes you question how such dreadful people could exist.
How could someone be held captive in such a horror by four high school boys?
More importantly, how could any criminal justice system have allowed them to get away with it the way they did? You’ll be shocked at how little was done in retaliation for their vicious murder of Junko.
the reason behind killing Junko Furuta
A good girl named Junko resided in Misato, Japan. She was adored by her classmates and abstained from both alcohol and smoking. Junko, a sixteen-year-old beauty, was probably popular because of this. Unfortunately, the school bully was also attracted to her charms. Hiroshi Miyano became enraged when he asked Junko out and she politely but firmly declined.
Miyano wasn’t accustomed to hearing no. He wasn’t just the school bully; he was also a recognised yakuza affiliate. The yakuza, a sizable criminal organisation renowned throughout Japan for their ferocity, are essentially the country’s gangsters. Naturally, Miyano had a vendetta in mind.
On November 25, 1988, a random boy attacked Junko as she was riding her bicycle home from her baito (part-time employment). As the youngster fled, Junko lost control of her bike, and Miyano, who was “fortunately” across the street, ran over to assist her. Miyano volunteered to take her on a walk home. Unaware Junko accepted the proposal. She had no idea that Miyano and her other three high school buddies were working on their strategy to kidnap her.
Hiroshi Miyano, Nobuharu Minato, Kamisaku Jo, and Yasushi Watanabe are the four boys that were in charge of capturing Junko Furuta and torturing her afterward.
Initially, Miyano repeatedly sexually assaulted her in an abandoned warehouse, but he and his friends later thought that it would be more fun to kidnap her in her entirety. They took her to Nobuharu’s house, where she was brutalised considerably more. The boys coerced Junko into telling her parents that she was evading them and that they should not search for her because she was doing well.
The 44 days that followed for Junko were excruciatingly painful. Junko would be raped by 100 different men—mostly other yakuza members—more than 500 times. She suffered from rape, sodomy, beatings, and starvation. They enjoyed themselves by making her masturbate in their presence and sticking various things into her genitalia.
Scissors, a bottle, an iron bar, a hot, exploding light bulb, roasted chicken skewers, roasting needles, and an explosive firework were mercilessly forced into Junko’s vagina. Junko would eventually lose control of her bladder and bowel motions due to the extreme trauma her internal organs would endure. The severity of the beatings grew as the men and boys were too repulsed to continue sexually assaulting her.
The parents of Miyano were aware that the girl was being held captive in their home, among the many other horrific elements of this case. They initially believed Junko to be Miyano’s lover, but when Junko asked them to aid her in escaping, they realised the horror that was happening. The Minatos would subsequently accuse Junko of being responsible for Nobuharu’s arrest because they were too terrified of yakuza retaliation.
They peed on Junko, hung her from the ceiling and used her as a punching bag, beat her with golf clubs and iron rods, forced her to eat live cockroaches and drink her own urine, made her sleep on the balcony in the freezing winter, put her in a freezer for hours, and used pliers to twist off one of her nipples.
After 20 days of suffering, Junko was able to call an emergency number, but the boys snatched the phone away from her and disconnected the call before she could say anything. They burned Junko’s eyelids with hot lighters as punishment, and they doused lighter fuel on her legs and feet to set them on fire.
One day, a boy who had taken part in one of the rape sessions felt bad and confessed what they had done to his parents. His parents made a police call and requested that they visit the Minato residence. The Minatos pretended to be astonished when the cops showed up and said they had no idea what they were talking about. The Minatos even invited them inside as a ploy to demonstrate that they had nothing to conceal.
The officers left the house without even looking for Junko because they foolishly reasoned that the Minatos must be innocent since they were inviting them in. Who knows if they had just entered and properly assessed the situation, Junko could have survived her trauma.
The guys challenged Junko to a game of Mahjong on January 4, 1989. Even in her battered state, Junko thrashed the boys, which infuriated them. They doused her in gasoline and lit her ablaze once more. The lads believed Junko was staging her convulsive seizures when they occurred. In a few hours, she passed away.
The boys put Junko Furuta body in a 44-gallon barrel, loaded it with cement, and dumped it in Tokyo to dispose of it. Authorities didn’t find Junko until approximately a year later. Miyano felt they had evidence on Junko one day when they were asking her about another female, so she prematurely confessed to what they had done to her.
Surprisingly, the guys were given light sentences despite being underage by Japanese norms (Hiroshi, 18, Jo, 18, Nobuharu, 16, and Watanabe, 17). Miyano was given a twenty-year sentence while the others only received seven. All four lads have now been let out of jail, but it is unclear whether they have changed their ways.
Zero cents of the $425,000 in restoration costs that Mr. and Mrs. Minato ordered to be donated to the Furuta family were actually given to them. When the Nobuharu, Watanabe, and Jo were let out of prison, the Minatos gave them the proceeds from the sale of their home.
The men partied with the money. At that time, Miyano was still incarcerated, and his mother made a special effort to defile Junko Furuta grave. With unbelievable boldness, Miyano’s mother claimed that Junko was to blame for her son’s incarceration.
Even today, it is unclear how on Earth such a large number of injustices could have been perpetrated during the course of this unfortunate case. It’s unbelievable that this poor girl spent 44 days in hell with such little justice being done to her.
